Black Magic
lost 23 March 1944

Black Magic went down 23 March 1944 with an engine on fire. Sgt. John J. Verona, tail gunner on the crew, bailed out and spent the remainder of the war as an unwilling guest of the Germans at Stalag Luft I (at Barth, Germany). This water color was painted by John B. Wood, a member of the Royal Air Force, on April 25, 1945. Wood was possibly a POW with Verona at Barth. The airman shown bailing out is Verona.
